All of our experiences influence who we become. Memories from our past line up like arrows pointing to our future. In hindsight, the pieces fit together seamlessly, as if everything before led us to the moment we’re living in the present. For Tommy Iceland, that moment is now. It seems his whole life has prepared him for the journey he’s about to embark on. With cuts already recorded by Chris Tomlin (“Impact”), Jesus Culture (“For No Other Reason”), David Leonard (“Come As You Are” & “You Know Me”) and Stars Go Dim (“Revival”), among others, the singer, songwriter and worship leader recently moved his family to Nashville.

However, the road that led to high-profile songwriting credits and a publishing and recording contract with Full Circle Music began on an entirely different continent.

Born in Iceland, but raised in Sweden, Tommy came from a musical family. However, it wasn’t until his local church needed a drummer that he really experienced the power of faith-driven music. As he started playing drums for his local youth group, he was introduced to Hillsong Worship, an early influence. “I just fell in love with worship music, and it really helped me in my own personal faith,” Tommy shares. “I think worship music saved me. It was like therapy.”

In the midst of a challenging home life, his small Swedish church of nearly 50 people became a haven for the teenager working out his faith through song. “I ended up leading worship in my tiny little church, which was an old herring factory by the ocean. It was such an honor to be a part of that church together with my sisters and my mom,” remembers Tommy, who started writing songs at 13. “Church was really like the rescue for me. It’s such a big part of who I am today. Leading worship made me feel like I finally had a purpose and belonged somewhere.”

After years of leading other people’s songs, a life-threatening car accident awakened a desire in Tommy to share his original worship music. The summer after the accident, the budding artist embarked on a transformative mission trip to Tanzania where he played his own music for the first time in remote African villages in front of thousands. That trip gave him confidence to find his voice as an artist, and when he returned home, he began leading worship at a church with a thriving music program in the city of Gothenburg.

Recording under the moniker of Connect Worship, the Swedish church released an album in English for the first time in 2015. Those songs landed in the hands of industry leaders on the other side of the globe, which eventually enabled Tommy to sign a worldwide publishing deal with Full Circle Music.

Numerous trips back and forth to the States resulted in a storehouse of new songs birthed from co-writes with everyone from Seth Mosley, Mia Fieldes, Chris Tomlin, Bryan Fowler, Rueben Morgan, David Leonard, Jacob Sooter & Meredith Andrews.

Hailing from a country known for manufacturing some of the biggest pop songwriters and producers of our generation, it would be easy for a talented Swede like Tommy to naturally want to follow in the footsteps of Max Martin, the maestro behind massive hits by Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande. Yet, if he’s certain of anything, it’s that he’s called to give fellow believers a song to sing.

“The greatest honor I can have as a songwriter is just to hear people sing songs that I’ve been a part of writing,” he offers, “and form prayers that help them connect with God.”
